During my Ph.D., I identified and studied some of the first genes to be “switched on” in the zebrafish embryo. One of these genes, I studied functionally and discovered that it is important during heart and brain development, and in establishing the left hand side from the right during organ placement.
“Imprinting” is the means by which two copies of the same gene are expressed differently depending on which parent they originated from. I am currently investigating how one particular gene is imprinted in the canine, and how this process might have evolved.
